Starting college is a huge transition. You’re balancing classes, meeting new people, figuring out how to share a room, and maybe even learning how to live away from home for the first time. For a lot of students, homesickness is strongest in the first few weeks, but what if it doesn’t fade?
That’s exactly what one student wrote in to ask:
“I’ve been at college for a couple of months now, and I still feel homesick. To make it worse, I feel like I’m the only one of my friends going through this. What should I do?”
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Homesickness can last well beyond move-in week, and it’s more common than people admit. Here are a few ways to work through it:
1. Remember: You’re Not the Only One
It might feel like everyone else has adjusted perfectly, but many students are quietly missing home too. College is full of big changes, and it’s normal for those feelings to pop up months into the semester. Try opening up to a friend—you might be surprised how many can relate.
2. Create Comfort Routines
Little rituals can make your dorm feel more like home. Schedule a weekly call with your family, watch your favorite show on the same night each week, or keep a comfort item (like a blanket or candle alternative) nearby. Small consistencies bring big comfort.
3. Bring Home to You
Photos, playlists you grew up with, or snacks you love can help bridge the distance. Surrounding yourself with familiar things makes your new space feel warmer and more you.
4. Balance Alone Time and Connection
Homesickness can make you want to retreat, but spending time around others often helps. Join a club, plan a coffee run, or even just do homework in a common space. Building new connections gives you something here to look forward to.
5. Be Patient With Yourself
Missing home doesn’t mean you’re not cut out for college. It means you care about where you came from. Over time, you’ll find new rhythms, routines, and friendships that help your dorm feel like home too.
