Move-In Day Tips: What No One Tells You

Move-in day can be equal parts exciting and exhausting. To help things go smoother, here’s the advice we wish someone told us before move-in.

1. Arrive On Time

Not too early. Not too late. Trust the schedule your school gives you.

2. Pack in Reusable Bins

Skip cardboard. Use:

  • Under-bed bins

  • XL Ziploc bags

  • Suitcases you can store flat

3. Bring a Step Stool

You’ll need it for:

  • Bed risers

  • Hanging curtains

  • Unpacking the top shelf

4. Clean First

Wipe everything down before you unpack.
Must-haves: paper towels, wipes, mini vacuum

5. Coordinate with Your Roommate

Leave some space for shared planning. No one likes walking into a fully-done room they didn’t help design.

6. Print a Checklist

Keep your cool by checking off:

  • Command hooks

  • Extension cord

  • Phone charger

  • Shower caddy

  • Flip flops for the bathroom

7. Pre-shop with your Dormie Board!

The earlier, the better. Every year, people wait until move-in week to decorate and by then, the cute stuff is out of stock, shipping is delayed, and the dorm section at Target looks like it’s been ransacked. Don’t be that person. Pick out your favorite board and snag all the cute decor now. Get shopping.
